I have worked and worked on our clan site to get rid of these bots. The only 100% effective method to use is to admin approve everybody. It's a royal pain in the ass. From what I understand, phpBB3 has made great improvements in this area. That is what WT and I are working on. I don't know what his timetable is, but I've already gotten the tech issues with converting our current forum over.

Until then, we'll have to just deal and Jeremy Piven them

Wouldn't the use of captcha eliminate most of these bots?

I think, based on long ago recollections, the bots actually post the code needed to register regardless of what's shown on the screen.

It's the way the form is submitted that's the security flaw. Dunno why they haven't ever fixed it.

Keeper is correct. These forums use a version of captcha, but the bot makers have figured out a way to bypass it completely. I have even modded the forum, but the bots dont seem to care...

Here's hoping phpBB3 is more secure.

I modded my clan website to disallow anybody who registers with website info. This bot is always [email protected] and doesn't use that info when it registers.

It's annoying to say the least.

There is a phpbb hack which requires you to choose pictures of animals and cars upon registration., and it uses javascript code to assign random numbers to pictures to display, and you can extend the picture library easily.

I think you should install it, and replace the pictures with those of weapons and some other thing which is related.

If you guys can hang in there for a bit longer, the upgrade should be happening in a week or two. I am just getting used to the new forum permissions and template. If the bots are breaking the new captcha I will implement Snipe's suggested system.
