Not fast enough  Yet...

I would like to read what the "pros" say, but I suspect its practice, practice, practice and perfection of the movement and timing.

Practise making a long smooth curve with your mouse before jumping. Try to keep the curve as consistent as possible, no stalling or rushing through it. Keep an eye on your vel as you test to see what kind of mouse motion is generating the most speed.

Also, go practise ptrain over and over. When you pass a level that is hard for you, try to replicate that motion again.

umm its really odd for me cuz 1 week i can bhop in thr 450's plus and the next week 400's...... my strafe jump normall gets pretty high maybe 470-500

SND

2008-04-09 01:15:02

mine seems to vary in different games sometimes i can do 470-490 no problem but sometimes on a crap day i do 410-440 but i do notice that my connection is bad to the server when that happens like a jumping choke of 10 or my fps suddenly dropping from 160 to 30.

As what has been said already focus on the first jump and get it right like getting a nice smooth curv also i find pressing hard on the strafe key and as well doing a S movement in the air with the mouse and strafe keys not sure what we call that tho. maybe if u can get allot of speed on the start of the first jump then work on air control to maintain that vel. Using mag surf map has helped me with this so start the map and change air acceleration to let say 60-80 for starters then every time u complete it drop the airacceration by 10 or 5 and keep doing it until u reach down to 35-25. 25 in the smallest i can do. reason why this helps with maintaining a high speed u have to generate vel and keep it with little airacceration the harder it is the maintain a high vel and so helps u focus on your mouse movement in the air with the right combination of strafe keys.
hoped this helped

when i am playing alone on a listen server i can move at a reasonable speed.

if I am playing a 4v4 the fastest i can move is probably walking speed.

Ha, I can beat all you guys. I move really fast whilst falling from a high level in a rat map, lol. That's about it though!

dbanimal, dude, if i can learn the strafe and speed skate, anyone can.
I did not even play a video game till i was 40, having been secluded in a Shaolin monastery for 30 years. But that is another story.

I hit 500+ on occasion, 450-490 and sustained down to sprint after about 5 or 6 strafes.

since you wont get much over 480 with your first jump the secret is air control. switching strafe in the air and switching mosue swing directions and timing the bounce perfectly you will go over 500. thats all it is! :)

Liez!

I've gotten a peak of 490 on a strafe jump on a normal server many times.

On A good day I constantly jump 430ish and on a bad day I'm at around 350ish

I've gotten 3500 before consistently. No joke.

how fast i've moved? around 540-550~ on the floor from a normal strafejump

just need to be a bit lucky !

average? no idea, I don't really pay attention - if I feel like I need to be moving faster/slower due to how the match is going, then I do that. as long as you can maintain 450-470 for 2-3 hops, then you are fine (sprint regens and can redo it by then)

I think i said that

But have a go at the map it can be a pain at first but it trains u to improve your air control and as well get u out bad habits that slow down the bhop such as pressing the forward key in the air. Then when u done enuff of that trying doing laps around lost with out stopping and see how fast u go.

I tried it once on my empty server but then other people joined and that was the end of it. I'll get around to it one of these days.

I don't really pay attention to my speed. But I can tell when I'm moving pretty good in team play while following other players. And I lack consistency. Maybe 1 out of 5 attempts I move pretty good. The other 4 times I realize I have spammed the sprint key waaaaaay too much and had poor velocity.

I still can't seem to master alternating the strafe keys between hops... which seems to be where true speed is generated. So my best speeds actually come from curving right or left around corners.

Just when I'm feeling pretty comfortable with my technique, Neolinkster pays our server a visit... it's like superman reversing time! :o

Or I visit the War Room. I look around and see no one near me then... HI There BLAM... HI2U... KABLOOEY... Well Hello... ZZZZAP! HAHA. It's great!

how do you know your speed?

cl_showpos 1 in console
its the "vel" value in upper right

first jump is the fastest after that it lowers and plateaus the only time the strafe speeds you up is in low grav
but the first jump does involve a lot of strafing its the alternation that maintains it

Yeah I dont pay much attention to my speed. It fluctuates so much in any hop anyways its not even worth trying to average it out. when i hit the ground in my fastest of bhops it'll say 490 or something but when i jump again im at like 520+. Then coming back down it drops again so who really knows how fast you're actually going. I dont worry about my velocity so much in matches, especially team games. If my mates need me, I go as fast as I can, If we're in control of the map and im playing it safe, You wont see me bhop at all.

I suggest that when people practice their bhop, they dont CONSTANTLY try to bunnyhop. You gotta refrain yourself from trying to move all over the map at the fastest pace possible. I typically only do that when Im rushing or powering up.

Also, I use both mwheeldown and space as jump. With space I could probably get 400-450 on average (thats the velocity when i hit the ground, not in the air) and with mwheeldown its about 100 velocity faster

Thats a powerful bit of advice. I still have a tendency to be enjoying the faster speeds and find myself bounding into areas i have no business leaping into. Over aggressiveness can get you killed quickly. I now try to think of hopping as just a sprint quick to another area. The crouch jump strafe is more for close quarters battle. Conserving some sprint can be better than speeding to an area on occasion.

about 480 to 500  once u get the feel of how the movement is in the game. it will just come easy and u dont even got to worry about it 8)

top was 530-540 but only once... then from time to time I get 490-500.
But generally my bhop fluctuates a lot ...so I would say 400-480 as an avarage....

Epoch

Yup same for me Onti. I found that I can reach initial hops of around 520+ but my average is 400-450. I maintain speeds closer to 400 probly 60% of the time and above that only 40%. Better than being stuck at 320.

most likely onti 425+ as an average...you're usually over 400 when I spec...

Above 400 cosistantly but do slow down to below 400 aftwer 6 or more hops so i end up resteting every few hops to jhelp maintain speed. Peak vel is about 480 max
I find it depends on the map some maps seem faster than others.

I'm once had the thought that maybe certain textures are visually harder to jump on until you get used to them. I have changed maps and gone from lightning fast to super noob in one change until I adjusted to the new map. It's weird, but I think it was small tiles versus large tiles. Maybe it like those optical illusions, which line is longer, which dot is smaller etc.

By the way I use this to turn speedo on and off.

Code: Select all

bind "F4" "incrementvar cl_showpos 0 1 1"
also works fo net_graph 3

Code: Select all

bind "F9" "incrementvar net_graph 0 3 3"
