The area he was in is a very vast area and its easy to get lost or have problems if you get hurt out there, I've been there and it gets very hot sometimes 115-120 degrees. If you ran out of water it wouldn't take long or if you had some other kind of medical emergency you are pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
