Hey guys i get this very irritating problem whenever i get shot / blown up, my screen goes so red (it lasts for like 3 seconds) so basically most of the time if someone shoots me with a crossbow, im gone because i cant see them(well just the faintest bit) and then they shotty me. Heres how red it goes:

Ive got vibrance set to default etc, and my game isnt overly bright, but i still get this major redness problem whenever i get shot / blown up.

A few people have reported having this problem in the past. Not sure there is a easy fix for you, but I would start off with trying to do a complete removal of your video card drivers and install the newest ones available. What video card do you have?

Wait, this is a problem? I thought it was just a part of how the game worked...happens to me all the time.

Same here, never heard of such a thing and it never "blinds" me to the point where I can't see what's going on for any given time.

Edit: I have seen this when I've been killed but not whilst being shot at!

yeah I have heard like 3 or 4 people say this happens to them. For me when I get shot the screen only goes partially red for a split second and its only red on the side of the screen where I got shot from.
I found this post from someone else who was saying the same thing, not sure if he got it fixed or not or what he did, maybe you could check with him if nothing else works.

i have the same problem. i cant see anything but red for 2-3 seconds after getting hit with a smg nade or rpg.

my digital vibrance is default, if i turn it down colour quality will become really bad, and before i installed my current drivers i did a complete removal of the old ones in safe mode. It has always happened to me when you get shot it goes red (thats part of the game) but not to the point where it basically blinds me.

any other ideas? :(

you never did state what video card you have. I have run this game with many different Nvidia cards and have never seen that happen on any of them. The redness I have always seen is limited to about 10 % of the screen and as I said its only on the right side, left side, top or bottom depending on what side the shot came from. I have a older ATI card on a machine at work Ill test it there and see if its any different.

I have an ATI Radeon 4870x2, so its not an old card at all, on another note, has anyone with ATI cards noticed the difference with orb quality between nvidia and ati cards? orbs rendered by the ati cards are just a normal ball shape with no fast motion effect(the dragging trail behind the orb) wheras the nvidia rendered orbs look a lot better and when shot has the dragging tail effect, i also noticed that the orbs rendered by my ati card are very translucent, making them a lot harder to see compared to orbs rendered by nvidia cards. But the more important note right now is the extreme redness.

I have a ATI 4870 1 GIG in my desktop and an Nvidia 512 gig in my laptop. I dont see any difference between the cards as far as orbs go. On the desktop (ATI 4780), the orbs do not look translucent or clear for me and when they are fast orbed I get the trail you mention.

I am however getting the same red problem with this card that I did not get with previous 2 ATI 1950s in crossfire. I have looked at the AVIO color saturation in the ATI Catalyst Control Center and set it to 0. I think it helped some but I will have to play the game more on that setting to be sure.

its not exactly more transluscent, the orbs are not as bright, making them harder to see and making them look more see-through, i see a slight train but i think because the orb isnt bright enough you harly see that as well. If i got onto a map with HDR lighting like lockdown_r3 the orbs look exactly the same as they do with my nvidia card, nice and bright, and a bright trail following the orb. BTW i have got the brightness quite bright atm. And turning down the brightness does not make the redness become less (haven't tried saturation)

Delete the file called.
HudAnimations.txt
Which is found in \half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\scripts

If it isnt there try placing this in the folde it is straight from the .gcf unmodified.

edited above post.
I did soem messing around with the values in my file and managed to reproduce the problem so thought it may be it, the file i link to is clean and unmodified.

keefy I fucking love you.

What I did was instead of using your file (which still made the screen red) I just used an empty text file called "HudAnimations.txt" and it gets rid of the red entirely. Hopefully this is legal :)

you may want to fiddle with the values under the following headings, use ctrl+f to find it.
event HudTakeDamageHighleft, right etc

First number is the amount of red, second the amount of green, third the amount of blue, and fourth how opaque it is. it is the 4th number you wanrt to tweak i think.

After messign around I forgot to remove the file I modified earlier and went for a quick game, its surprising how much I use it for telling wen a shot hurt me without lookign at HP bar.

Heads up: Use of the blank hudanimations.txt file to get rid of flash when shot is cal illegal, as it is classified as a custom hud, and therefore illegal in cal. Have a nice day. :)

i actually found out about the hud animations script file a few weeks ago, didnt think of posting it here, figured out how to change the colour etc when i got shot, but didnt end up using it, because i like being able to know as a warning ive been damaged badly when i get shot, its just too red, might have a play around some other time again to get the colour less intense but intense enough for you to know you've been badly damaged.
