I have never been so humiliated as on this map. Maybe i don't get it. What do you think about Aim Arena?

Is it vital?
Is it a miserable abortion of a map?
Is it awesome?
Should i get decent on it?

I have a thing for this map.
I hate it.
WHY?

Honestly, I think this map contains the most combat with some strategy involved. I learned how to play HL2DM on this map. You get to learn weapon combos and how to play. It's not a necessity to get good on it, but if you do, you'll know how to use what weapons in certain situations.

I'm going to be honest with you. I think you hate it because you haven't learned the weapons too well yet. If you keep playing aim, you'll learn those weapons better than if you kept playing lockdown.

it is a practice map

the fact that it is used in competitive play is a fucking joke

might as well use ptrain in cal 1v1 and see how far people can jump, since both maps only test how good one is at one aspect of the game

Keep in mind, vdus made the map, and many of them loved 1v1s there.

Agree about ld anyway, neither it nor aim are serious competitive maps. Aim was made for ffa mag/movement practice, and ld is a random chunk of hl2 single player with dm entities added. Hardly tournament level maps, but we had a serious lack of solid maps for a long time, so we used what was available, and what players had come to enjoy. Im all for moving on now that we have a variety of competition-build maps available, but im pretty sure im in the minority here, unfortunately.

Oh, and im not just saying i hate it because anyone can beat me there, people can beat me there because it takes close to no skill to win on aim, just a decent mag and control of the rpg.

Nutri-Grain wrote:Notice how all the sw and vdus members are calling it a joke, and yet lockdown 4v4 is not a crapfest at all!

If you have a good mag, and you know how to use the weapons properly, you will own aim arena. If you're too reliant on spam and narrow hallways where you can just ball the shit out of people; you'll lose on this map. Listen to tlc guys, the number one ball whore in hl2dm. Listen to him cut up a map that isn't focused around spam...hmmm.

You either love aim arena, or you hate it.

The fact that it is used in league play or not isn't a big deal. It's in there because enough people like it; just like all the other maps.

Oh yeah, ptrain is just like aim arena...fucking idiot. You think it's only focused around one aspect, but you're way off. You can win that map in many different ways. You can use your aim, you can use your spam (there are 6 smg nades you know...and I think on reloaded there are 7), and you can whore the rpg if you know how to avoid grenades and mags. Hell, sometimes I go only grav nades on that map just cause it works too.

If you aren't one of the many spam conformists roaming the narrow hallways of lockdown 24/7, then you will enjoy aim arena. Everyone else will call it shit.
notice how the guy accused of cheating loves aim arena Image

see i can do it too Image

and yeah lol @ purporting that the team who made the map has some sort of agenda against it when in fact they would know better than anyone what the map was and was not intended for

i will throw in a 'fucking idiot' in here just for good measure too since tossing swear words back and forth is the only way to have discussions with people like you

And you think that is not skill? Believe me if someone can beat you there, they definitely have skill, you just may have less skill on that particular map. Every map takes skill and knowledge of the map to win on it and with aim there is definitely a certain way to play it if you want to win on it.

bahlk

2008-12-21 23:23:19

there is an answer to almost every situation in that map that makes it "gay" you just have to execute it

while that one situation that is hard to adapt to that provides 90% of the game play is a stupid stand off w/ mag across the map and the person w/ the best mag usually wins those scenarios, so naturally u have to avoid that situation as best u can.

Or do you have to double jump to the rpg or single jump from the crosswalk?

I personally dont like the map and it is one of the reasons I dont compete in the 1v1 division. My dislike of it stems mainly because I am not good at the map, plain and simple. Thats not the map's fault, that is my lack of skill. However I disagree that its only good mag aim alone that wins that map, but it is a very big factor. Other things that I see a player needs to have to win that map are: good grav nading, and smg nading both take a good timing and nade placement, crossbow skill, jump timing to reach the charger and the rpg, and air control to reach the rpg and other platforms besides the fact that its an evasion technique and sometimes an attack technique with the lifts.

Just watch some of Onty's videos to see some of the things that can be accomplished on that map.

Whether it was intended for or should be a competative map I can't say, but it does require more than just good mag skill to win that map.

As to the reason i put aim in the 1v1 div mapcycle and playoffs in the first place- its hugely popular, and has in fact been the most popular (most often chosen) 1v1 map in all 4 seasons.

Note that it also beat out almost every other map in the season 5 1v1 map poll.

So, hate it though some may (or prefer it replaced by something less linear, as i would), its not likely to be going anywhere anytime soon.

pro's
no where to really hide
i enjoy the fast pace
flying through the air is fun
orb cieling richochets are awesome.
not too many narrow confined spaces so fast orb is for me a little easier to defend.

con's
spawn location domination is more than possible from RPG spot.
i loose by a lot on this map. da1 68 to 1 was painful. lostarnea was 22 to 9. to me that seems to make it an unbalanced map. could be i need to train up on it though.

I'd really like to see a hl2dmu LAN party. Then we can settle all the cheat accusations once and for all. As for beating someone up, I am always curious to see if internet opinions hold up to real world opinions. When I say something here, I'm just as willing to say it in rl.
