Hey HL2DMU : (

Since the economy is down, my dad's job isn't doing too well. They are doing some cuts so in return, that means some cuts for the family too. This isn't a "I'm quitting" post. It's a "I'll be on absent leave" post.

So my parents decided to cut the internet and tv. The TV isn't too big of a deal. It's the internet of course. I'm not sure how long I'll be gone or how 100% this is going to happen, but I'd also like some advice.

I just bought my computer this summer. http://www.hl2dm-university.com/forum/p ... f=6&t=2140

I worked the entire summer to get it and now that I'll have no internet, I feel that it may be worthless. I'm debating on whether to sell it or not. If you are too lazy to look at the specs, here they are:

Link Depot 4Pack 80mm Case Fan-----------------------------------------------------$3.99
EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640MB-----------------------------------------------------$159.99
Evercool 95mm Ever Lubricate CPU Cooler---------------------------------------------$7.99
Bytecc 42-1 USB Card Reader--------------------------------------------------------$9.99
Intel BOXDGG31PR LGA 775 Motherboard---------------------------------------------$64.99
Hitachi Deskstar 7200 RPM SATA 320 GB Hard drive-----------------------------------$59.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz Processor-----------------------------------------$179.99
Tricod 8068 Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450W Power Supply-----------$39.99
Corsair 4GB DDR2 Memory----------------------$87.00 with 20 dollar mail in rebate--- $67.00
Hanns-G Black 19" 5ms LCD Monitor------------------------------------------------$159.99
Microsoft Windows XP Home with SP2b for system builders----------------------------$84.99
hec HP585D 585W ATX12V Power Supply - No Power Cord - OEM---------------------$23.99
First Gen Logitech G15 Keyboard---------------------------------------------------$??.??
Logitech MX518 Mouse------------------------------------------------------------$30.00(?)
ALTEC LANSING BXR1121 15 Watts 2.1 3 piece music and gaming speaker system------- $29.99

How much can I get for it? Should I sell it etc. Also, I have a 120GB iPod Video 3rd gen which will also be worthless if I don't have a computer or a way to download music. Should I sell that too?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

maybe you should consider getting a job, any job after school and pay for your own internet? I mean its like 40.00 a month right?

i agree with punk, you should get an after school job
also selling some of those things wont be a bad idea

Yeah get a job. If the same thing happened to my parents, and I had no job, and I couldn't get a job....well fuck I'd pay for internet out of my savings until i run out, lol.

Not many places have jobs, they have too many workers for the jobs already.

Considering that he worked hard to buy the pc in the first place it’s better not to sell it. The resell value would be far less than he bought it and would of meant all that hardwork would of been for nothing. I suggest he keep it because it can be useful in other ways without internet it is a multitask product at the end of the day. I would only sell it if it is necessary. In the mean time people are finding it tough in the economic climate so cutting back on needless stuff and taking any job to get by is a usually the only choice. Internet is needless exspense but if he can find some way to fund it or change to a cheaper provider all the better for him.

dont sell it. looking at the specs you didnt buy it to play hl2dm... you can still borrow games from your friends and play them on your pc. and youll eventually have internet again anyway. i wouldnt even consider selling a music playing device... lifes crap without music man. :D you can still get new albums / songs from your friends through bluetooth or something. have em dl the things you need.

1. The honest way. Get a job, earn your keep, feel good about yourself paying for something and pitching in whilst earning the respect of your family for manning up.

2. The scumbag way. Get a wireless adapter and steal the internet from neighbors. You will not be able to play hl2dm and you'll be taking the low road.

3. The apathetic way. Do nothing. Find something else to keep your attention. i.e. a single player game. D/L hammer & sdk become a redicoulous mapper when you finally get back on.

keep the computer. if nothing else, use it to create and revise a resume`. i dont know what other applications/skills you may have, but that pc can help you out financially if you get creative with it. maybe not earn a living, but help make some cash now and then. take some free courses at local college, library, etc. and pc's are still a source of education and entertainment w/o gaming.

summer is just around the corner. find a job. find 2 or 3 jobs. mow lawns, clean gutters, paint houses, volunteer somewhere to get your foot in the door... again, get creative. when i was your age (man, that sounds like a cliche) i detassled corn, walked beans, collected copper and bricks from construction sites, mowed lawns, cleaned gutters, raked leaves, shoveled snow, built retaining walls, dug ditches, etc.

Thanks guys. I was considering getting a job and paying for it myself. I was trying to look at all the vantage points to decide what I was going to do. I know some of you don't like me, but thanks for the advice. : D

you're pretty big, not sure how old you are... have you considered bouncing at a bar? do u have any concert venues nearby? work crowd control/security. size isnt the most important thing... a level head and reliabililty go a long ways. i did both of the above to help pay for college... and im not near your size. i went as far as working for free at bars doing whatever they asked just to get my foot in the door. bouncing, cleaning, tending, stocking... whatever it took.

i also hounded construction sites and lumber yards. i would work for free a day or two to get my foot in the door... if it didnt result in pay by the third day i moved on. construction sites always need someone to remove scrap lumber, sweep floors, fill dumpsters... any kind of manual non-skilled labor essentially. lumber yards are a bit harder to get into, they have to think more about the liability of a "free" laborer. but once you get your foot in the door you'll gradually get better pay and be sent on "trips" delivering/hauling lumber, sheetrock, shingles, etc.

Okay, who doesn't like BI? Please let me know so I can ban the lot of you.

There are probably free dialup services somewhere out there. Start googling while you still can.

Those are awesome ideas. I'm 18 though so I don't know how well that'd work. Plus, doesn't bouncing require fighting? I'm not too big into that.

I got a job. I'm working at a super walmart as a cart pushing. I'm working around 34 hours a week so I'm making decent money.

Merlyn

2009-03-19 18:56:46

I pushed carts for years in HS at Kroger. It's not a bad gig.

Try busting your ass for an hour or so and getting a stockpile of carts then hanging out in your car and smoking or reading a book and just taking in pieces. Does this make sense? I used to get the whole lot clean then go to Border's and read magazines for a while, then come back in with a full load.

badinfluence

2009-03-19 19:01:14

Nah, I can't do that. It's literally impossible. It's a super walmart, so it has the general merchandise side and the grocery side. There's just too many corrals to be able to do that.

[KBH]Tazzer
