i believe this varies, not by the site, but by your OS and/or browser

Use mousewheel click if you want the links to open in the same time, mousewheel click also closes tabs when you click on them

Most phpBB installations open new windows/tabs when you click on links in a post. The U is different in this regard. I just got in the habit of holding down <ctrl> when I click on a link on the U (which will cause the link to open in a new tab or window). It may be a setting in phpBB that can be changed but I can't be bothered to look.

In HTML parlance this is controlled by adding a target="_blank" to the anchor and has little to do with your browser or OS (unless the browser manufacturer decides to ignore the standards). In most modern browsers you can control whether _blank is opened in a new window or a new tab.

or since you are using firefox (as do I) I got in the habit of simply right clicking on all links and selecting open in new tab.

Mousewheel clicking a blank space on the tab bar also re-opens the last tab you closed.

There may be an option in the admin area, I'll take a look.
