Ok so holidays are here and i gots me a holiday present - a DEAD GPU!!! how lovely.
so, i'm pretty much already set on either the HD 4870 512MB or the HD 4870 1GB Toxic

1) anyone who has either of them please post your experience?
2) does hl2dm actually use the 1GB of RAM if i chose that one over the 512?

don't bother "wTF future compatibility" as i'm more and more convinced GPU is a yearly purchase :D (+!)

thx

One HD4870 with 512 will be MORE then fine for HL2DM val. For optimal experience with any game buy the 4870 1gb DDR5, in your case if your just worried about HL2DM then a HD4870 512MB with DDR3 will be fine. EDIT I had one HD3870 in my Alienware in upgrade anticipation for the mobility HD4870x2 DDR5 and it handled HL2DM like it's nothing, around 220 average FPS in almost any map, so you can imagine what a HD4870 will do for you!

I have an ATI Radeon 4870 1 gig. Yes it is a bit overkill for DM, but it isnt the only game I play and I want to play the new games well too.

I get around 300 fps on most maps, unless there is a real problem with the map. It wasnt much more than the 512 mb one so IMO it was worth the extra $$ for 2x the card.

I have a Radeon 4870x2 2GB and it runs hl2dm everything maxed+custom values to increase appearance, with 16 AF and 8AA at 300 fps average, I love it.

Never heard of the brand/model Toxic

Get a GTX295. :) nvidia is kicking ati's butt.
A GTX260 (what I'm running) would work too. With my set up I'm getting 300+ fps in all maps. And a gpu isnt a yearly upgrade unless your a lame enthusiast or have a lot of money to blow.

4870x2 still beats it btw.

@ para - the toxic is the model name ATI gave their 1GB HD 4870
@ DA - hardly a lame enthusiast man, i bought the ATI Radeon 9600X back in 06, defo not the best around at that time and the 8800 GTS 320MB last year - completely not the best one at that time.
and check the benchmarks http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gef ... 218-3.html (see bottom of article and the next page.)
Nvidia are acting like snotty royalty not lowering their prices (as they should against the clearly visible competition) and keep on renaming the same exact core over and over again. losing crowd and losing face. i love nvidia but since when getting more for your money is downgrading in any way. is my point bro.

The toxic versions of the cards simply refers tho the cooling system on them.

ATI is doing better than Nvidia right now bang for buck wise for sure. Once the 4890x2 comes out all game is ATI. As of now the best card on the market is the GTX295.

Well nvidia and ATI are like always, just switching blows. Until there is a real reason to bring out a new card, nvidia will leave the GTX295 as their top card. Once ATI releases something new, nvidia will do the same. I'm completely content with my GTX260. :) I used a 7800GT for 5 years until it died and I had to send it in to get a new 8 series or whatever they are giving me, so this card will last me a long while.
