I took this computer and made all the upgrade options. It came out to 4,806 Euro.

For 5k if your friend has advanced computer building knowledge and can get good prices off of Ebay and Newegg for cooling parts and a Core i7-975 extreme processor you could afford a TRI-SLI 295 GTX setup for a little under/over 5k without alot of nice extras like epic headphones and sound card to go with his epic computer. It would rank among the worlds best PC towers for sure next to quad SLI setups... That said I'd reccommend NewGuy's suggestion with an added GTX 295, an upgraded audio card, a great LCD monitor and a Logitech G9 mouse, that=win.

Honestly i don't really understand this, I have 4gb RAM, Intel Quad and 9800 GX2 and my shit's WAY overpowered.

Most games or software... or the OS itself, aren't even coded to use all your ressources.
Games supporting DX10 aren't usually too stable when they use it. Then when you read the FAQ about how to help it they simply give you a " Use DX9 for now :D "

Unless you tell me your friend makes 3D renders while he's video editing, 5k on a computer is a complete waste.

When I work with 3d , video or when I have the whole CS3 open I really don't feel like i could use some more juice in this computer (wich i paid 1.3k ) and when I do, I look at my task manager and it's simply a matter of "fuck you, your software isn't design to use 4 cores"

If you really want to spend an entire 5k on a comp, get some crazy big HD screen and the best sound setup there is, because power wise, really, it's not worth investing past 2k unless you work for the NASA

I think "retard" is pushing it, it's more like we live in a consuming society where you must be the best (bla bla bla) and alot of people will fall for it and desperately buy anything because it's better.

Most people don't want , or simply can't spend the time understanding things beyond their already established lil world so they want to hear "it's new, it's better than the other junk, it works, and if it's not working, there's warranty"

Most people buy overpowered PC at quite a high price for absolutely no good reason, alot of secretarys will get dual cores etc because its the most powerful new and shiny package deal that is on sale right now... when actually she could've get a 200$ PC because all she needs is anything meeting Microsoft Office system requirement.

Not to mention that when you start adding a load of the leading edge components, you really have to work hard to keep it cool.

I would likely take the money and set up a mini LAN with an automated backup system to protect my data. Dumping it all into one machine is wasteful in my mind also.

DJ, if he winds up getting something with ridiculous cores, and if you guys have pretty good bandwidth, try talking him into letting you run a DM server on his machine in the background :)

Here's what I'd do if I really wanted to blow $5000 on a computer -

* Core i7 - whatever's the top (or second to top - top is usually never worth it) model
* 2x GTX 285 SLI at minimum
* 3+ GB
* Any decent high-report-rate mouse
* Matrox Triplehead2Go
* 3x low-input-lag LCD monitors
** 120 Hz monitors if they have < 10 ms lag on average.
* This triple-monitor ergonomic articulated arm: http://www.ergospecialist.com/arcview-t ... p-729.html :D

Keep up with the stuff. I HONESTLY don't know why he wants to spend that much on a computer. I wouldn't call him a retard but hes not the sharpest tool in the shed. He thinks he needs four 1 TB hd's because hes a photo major. Also he is a mac fanboy and challenged me to find something with kickass performance that would match a mac :?

I'll keep telling him that spending that much on a computer is stupid especially for a photo major.

Oh well lets see how this goes on. Keep posting 'em and I'll keep looking at them :D

lol? A core i7 extreme proc with dual SLI GTX 295's would burn a hole through a Mac tower before it even has the chance to say "Hi i'm a Mac, and I'm a douchebag". He has the ability to use TRI SLI setups but those are pretty unstable and uncharted territory with bad driver support, dual SLI is the most I'd go.

@thatguy, yeah sorry bud have no idea who you are, guessed newguy cause of your name+sig.

Mac Sucks Ass forget Mac. Mac is like taking salt peter instead of Viagra compared to an i7 rig.

well if he a media freak like me he properly want a quad core it does not give you advantage in games (unless there its multi-treaded app like crisis) but if he like anything thing like me who has like 3-4 different programs running at once that are resource intensive that hates when shit start to slow down productivity then quad would be ideal.

Anyway that amount of cash to spent on a pc well I just go crazy. I only spent 1,200 and am pretty happy with the results can not imagine what I would of achived with 5,000 or 2,500 to me since he talking about dollars me thinks.

he thinks he needs 4 TB's of space? ugh. by the time he came even close to filling even one of those HD's he will have paid prolly 3x as much as he would if he just bought another one when he filled the first. and if he really has that much important data to store he should be running a RAID array anyway. and if that was his plan, running a RAID on 3 1tb HD's is just rediculas.

Thats what I said. And my other roommate further drove into hus skull by using his single 1TB hd as example. He does photoshop, video editing, 3d modeling and video compositing and all the files hes saved up hes still not even halfway to filling up the drive. Plus he has games installed.
4TB is just ridiculous.

It's not that ridiculous, but that isnt the main point I want to make. The main point I want to make is the fact that he can buy 4 1TB hds for $320.00. So having that as an excuse to spend 5k is kinda silly considering how cheap they are. Also, to me, anyone that wants to spend that kind of money on a pc is foolish. A $5000.00 pc would be worth about $2000 in 3 months and you can get parts for much less that can get you near the same power. It's just a stupid investment. If I didnt have any pc parts and was going to spend 5k, I would spend the bulk of it on the monitor. I'll never go below a 37 inch monitor again. Then I would spend around 1.5 to 2k on the pc. That would leave around 1 to 2k left over to blow elsewhere.
