the best song writers ever

I'm drunk, browsing youtube and i know a lot of you guys listen to shit music, really really shit music. I can appreciate a lot of different music but that doesn't necessarily mean its good so here's a small introduction to some of what i consider the best written songs ever.

Gordon Lightfoot
Awesome song, not a huge lightfoot fan but Sundown is a good song too.
The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Link

Bob Dylan
It's fucking Bob Dylan, does it really need any explanation?
Tangled Up In Blue

Link

Simon & Garfunkel
When it comes to S&G you could pick any song they ever recorder, but no matter what mood I'm in this song just makes everything better, so i picked it as a personal favorite
The 59th Street Bridge Song

Link

Tom Petty
Alright For Now

Link

Jimmy Buffet
Everyone loves Jimmy, not many of the casual fans know about this song though and it is seriously one of his most impressive. I know Paradox will love it. Other amazing songs by Buffet would be: Come Monday, Pencil Thin Mustache, A Pirate Looks At Forty and idk i could seriously list this guy's entire greatest hits as some of the best written songs ever.
He Went to Paris

Link

I really wanted to put "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" on here, by the Traveling Wilburys (Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty) but since youtube has gone pop all i can find is bullshit covers by other bands that don't deserve my attention.

I'll list more when i've had less to drink but seriously, if it's not some homo electric fucking bullshit, feel free to add to this post, i doubt it's anything i've never heard of (if it truly is amazing) but this post is to educate the obviously younger population of this forum in what is real music and not just some catchy beat with some over hyped fucking retarded ass sun glasses wearing bum looker rhyming the same word 4 times in 8 different bars about the repression of his race.

Yeah I like Lightfoot and Jimmy Buffet too. I own albums from both.

For newer stuff I have albums from Breaking Benjamin and Nickelback.
I also like a lot of classic rock like Rush, The Who, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer and bunch of others.

Idk what you guys consider "the best song writers ever" because that's a matter of opinion really. But here's what I classify as 'innovative'. Something most people don't know about. Yeah that's right I said it. Now go listen to your fucking Nickleback.

Something I've been listening to lately:

Steely Dan (favorite writers) and my favorite pop tune of all time.
I love it.
Babylon Sister

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiy09DIsZFU

And i know, GHEY! but i love this silly tune also, and as Songwriters, awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrUAMvd9cyQ

And this tune is just great!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV8ARjMqBVM

And for songwriters, none better than McCartney/Lennon/Harrison
This tune set a high bar for a pop tune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxyJLxV0_-8

Songwriters don't get much better than this guy. This tune is one of my favorites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fChN-6VDakA
And here is a great songwriter team, Jagger/Richards, with a tune that sends chills down my spine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJMnES7WoT4

Lots of folks sell him short and hate him, but when i was High School, he was almost as big as Zeppelin.
He wrote this piece of Americana that i truly love. What a great song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0ExmL4LzCk

I'll quti with another GREAT songwriter and a song you can ID from the first chord.
This one song reminds me of being 13 more than anything in the world.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0WCQadt864

I'll stop with a tribute to his awesomeness and genius with this little tune, which is about the most beautiful and complex masterpiece i have ever heard.
Listen to it a few times at least, you'll get it. And then try to play it!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grmeznspMIc

OMG that is awesome! I'll call it my No. 1 TUNE since it is an instrumental.
Jeeeez that is genius.

EDIT: I have to add three songs that changed the face of modern music, two that are revolutionary and changed what is capable and one that is just plain beautiful
Songwriters are Brian Wilson/Carl Wilson

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCeD_6Y3GQc

That is just plain wrong.
The thread is about songwriters, no?

WOW, being a fan of techno/industrial stuff, that Animal Collective sounds like Brian Wilson with a DJ rig!
That shit is hot.

I dig the visceral electronics and layering.

Haha! The Black page No. 2, starring Chad Wackerman (not Terry Bozzio), Scott Thunes (pronounced Tune is)on bass, Bobby Harris on Key and Sax, the amazing Tommy Marrs on Keys, Ed Mann on percussion, Ike Willis on vocals and Ray White!

This at least I can agree with you on. Radiohead is just awful.

Now, Beardfish, on the other hand...
Same with Porcupine Tree, Bigelf, Anglagard, Transatlantic,

Turns out there are good modern rock bands. Not Radiohead though

And tiggy, just sos you don't misunderstand me, Animal Collective is dece, they're just not innovative

I guess that's everyone's opinions but I for instance happen to love Radiohead. And I also think Animal Collective are innovative. I like music for the feel and not based on some standardized, set in stone, template for what "good songwriting" is.

Well if you want to take into consideration of great song writers and who are very talented as far as the instruments they play, I would have to vote Dream Theater. Very talented musicians and they put a ton of thought into their music.

Well, i REALLY like The Bends, especially Just. Its a great album of songs. Everything after that seems to be a bunch of effects or unidentifiable guitar with mumbly singing or outright WTF is this?!?!
Frankly, OK Computer seems about as over-rated as any album could be. JMHO.

The Smiths were also amazing songwriters Morrisey for his lyrics and Johnny Marr for his guitar playing who can argue with the following lines:

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play

On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
Provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ

and one of their best live performances
