Nod32, used it for about 4 years and hasnt let me down once. Its pretty much install and leave it alone but has loads of options to configure if you feel the need. It also protects against spyware and Malware.

I use Avast. It's free and I haven't had a problem since I switched to it from Norton

Kapersky here too same as blas and rico , the newest version has a gaming mode so that the antivirus wont interfere with the games and still maintain protection. Has a lot of extra features too and so far its very good.

I like avast free
It has a silent / game mode
It does not bug the crap out of you to buy the product or spam you with ads.
It runs decently fast.

Some of my machines run AVG as well.

I do not pay for antivirus anymore.

I have used f-secure, avira, avg, avast, mcaffee, norton (terrible), nod32, kapersky.

i use nod32, though i'm not as strong of a fan as i used to be. i think they may be slacking off a bit. twice now i've been infected with something that nod32 told me about but didnt stop and couldnt get rid of.

a free version of malwarebytes took care of the problem both times.

1) Run your browser from a sandbox
2) Have a partition of windows strictly for intentional dangerous browsing, have deep freeze on it
3) Considering the time most antivirus takes to scan the whole machine, especially when you download alot, I just use my ghost whenever things gets slow and clumsy.

Agreed. I've not used a AV for a good 4 years or so. But since you asked, when I did use an AV, Nod32 seemed to be the best.

The Argumentalizer

I have never had a virus using any AV or not. With Norton, all i got was problems and a massive crap appl.
I know everyone i ever talked to that got infected, ran Norton or something, including my father.

Long time ago, i started using BLACK VIPER's optim. and disabled everything i don't use.
I run Spybot Tea Timer and Zone Alarm.
All DLs go to a separate drive.
I turn off System Restore, Indexing,...
I am behind a router.
I don't use any Windows Apps, except updates with Explorer.
I don't surf crap sites.

in my personal experience and many current reviews/rankings, they have fallen behind the competition.

Yeah but that's like saying a corvette sucks since it's slower than the viper.

Nod32 keeps my shit clean 100% I haven't had to use my spyware removal tools in years, and it's mean on a virus too considering I can stop nod32's process and it still finds them.

I run sandboxed anyway so I really don't worry.

wish i had the same experience dog. twice i've been infected with something by merely clicking on a google link. nod32 warned me i was infected but didnt block or quarantine the bugger. gawd only knows what my wife was doing when she got a bug.

yea conflict also mentioned working with sandbox. could you explain a bit more on the subject? i see there are several apps for doing this.

Ghost Dog_TSGK

2010-05-12 22:11:53

Basically you isolate a section of your hard drive for your sandbox, anything done within this sandbox is isolated and cannot affect anything but the sandboxed section of your hard drive, this section(s) is easily deleted if you happen across an infected program.

Remember those guys in the labs reaching into a plastic bubble with the gloves built into the wall, consider that bubble a sandboxed section of your HD that will vanish when you choose to flip the switch, perfect for testing sketchy programs but also for surfing the web etc.

Try this http://www.sandboxie.com/

They explain it better than I do.

I use common sense when browsing the internet. Best antivirus ever. Unfortunately, it's not for sale and I can't really make a copy of it so I'm thinking most of you are in the mud on that one.

[EYE] Valar

this rap about who needs an AV is funny. it's your internet needs that call the level of hazard.

Even if you go to perfectly trusted sites you can still get nailed. They all have ads or sometimes even get hacked. One site I frequent techbargains has had a virus twice. Good thing Vista brought up a UAC prompt and avast caught it. But if there is a security flaw in the browser and or your OS and you do not have antivirus it could get through. And trust me every OS and every web browser have security flaws. NO exceptions. These programs are simply to large and developed by way to many people to be perfect anymore. In fact I suspect over the years computers will start to become more like humans where everyone has a virus it is just how well you maintain them or keep them from getting out of control.

What I find more likely is that alot of people who do not have any antivirus protection may have a virus and just have no idea they do. Now days more viruses are less obvious they do not want to bog your system down or make it obvious. They would rather just sit in the background and wait for CC# or steam accounts, and maybe do a little low level calculations or spam email.
