It should read, "The grammar police are pervasive and omniscient; don't fuck around or they'll get you," because these are two distinct clauses that share the same general idea. Either a period or a semicolon would properly delineate them.

Semicolons, motherfucker - do you use them?

The brain doesn't work in frames per second, their are a dozen other factors that play into it.

The only thing I can think of is that if your only running at say, 30 fps, then the response time before you see you're mouse move is up to 33 ms which is definitely noticeable, especially if you aren't used to it.

source
interesting article

Basically, if that article is correct then if your playing with low resolution, high anti-aliasing, and motion blur on, you could have a much lower refresh rate and still feel smooth.

ty cheese.

And I am not questioning the performance leap to 120Hz, but if what my Bio professor said was true then the max you would need is 75Hz which a more conventional LCD display can do for a much cheaper price.

Since I am a douche-bag that did spend nearly 2k on a PC I will probably wait for some holiday sale and compound that w/ some coupon hack and get the Alienware 120Hz. Just to be sure.
However it would be nice to really know what is the smoothest/best/comfortable video display we can truly see.

And what about those baseball players? I asked the same shit to my professor years ago; I spoke about how they can see the spin on the ball and have about 20/10 vision or better (with regards to the *good* hitters that is) in both eyes, and surely they can detect and enjoy better video qualities then us normies. They can probably see exponentially more than a four-eye'd fag like billy when it comes to enjoying digital displays and such. ur such a fag tim.

fag.

But yah, billy's gay.

faggot.

srslyNOTnewguy

2010-09-03 00:18:13

Sorry, had to fap to some pics of that fag timmy.

Anyways I asked the professor about that shit and he said it may be "plausible" that a well-eyed baseball player could detect the difference between say "85 and 75" but most of us can only really see a improvement up to 70 or so.

He very well could be retarded.

EDIT: I myself, on my old CRT in 2004, noticed a HUGE difference between 60Hz and 75Hz.

Ko-Tao

2010-09-03 00:52:04

I see a clear difference between 100hz and 150hz in hl2dm (tested at a stable 300fps). The difference would probably be less noticable, or have less of an effect, if any, on gameplay in a genre that didnt require snap 180s and pinpoint aim (rts, mmo etc).

And ya, he could very well be retarded. Academics are great at claiming things based on theory or inconclusive tests yet being unable to offer any semblance of hard proof.

CellarDweller

2010-09-03 01:01:19

the thing with baseball is that the eyes can be trained, as well as muscle memory and mental apptitude.

think of hitting or playing catch in a room with a strobe light. also patterns can be drawn on a ball so that fastball, curve, slider present a different pattern as it approaches the batter. it actually trains both the pitcher and the batter. the pitcher learns the most effective spin for the particular pitch, and the batter learns to concentrate on the ball rotation.

corrected vision can be just as good as non-corrected for baseball. just because i can pick up the hand motion of the pitcher, and the rotation of the ball, doesnt a pro make. the pro still needs to be able to watch the ball motion until the last possible second before making the complex decision to swing and how to swing.

reflexes... thats the key.

Yea, i said equivalent, thing is light will bounce around off every surface into ur eyes so many times per second, that being said u dont see in frames, just wenever it bounces up into ur fagy eyeball.

L2k

2010-09-03 06:34:20

I agree with Pern, been over this many times in the past.

If you are getting 300 fps from the video card and the display is 60 hz, 75 ect, your are only displaying 60-75 fps as the monitor can only produce one frame per hertz cycle.

In regards to what the human eye can actually see, its a common myth that the human eye can only distinguish the difference between 0 and 60 or 80 (depending where its coming from) fps. Yes even bio professors can believe in myths.

My own personal experience on a monitor that can run up to 150 hz, there is a noticeable difference between 60 hz and 120. In fact I'd say its a huge difference to me, can't stand to play on anything at less than 120 hz.

srslyNOTnewguy

2010-09-03 23:18:05

I was wrong.
Grain is a cutie-pie.

Ya that is my point. We can all say for sure the limit is somewhere higher than 15 yet university professors are claiming we cannot. It all depends on how the person determines the speed an eye can see, that particular professor based his claim on tests done on a single cell which did not account for the fact the brain may be able to accept signals from thousands of cells at slightly different times asynchronously to construct a smooth image.

I figure that when trying to give yourself the ideal hardware you should just go as high as you can sustainably afford while keeping a system balanced ( read that carefully). Then you know that A. few people out there will have a significant advantage over you, and B. if you can react or see more than the dogma claims you have access to that or C. humans may be able to learn to deal with more even if they lack the skill by default. You probably do not have the quality of hearing a blind person has but you do have the ability to train yourself to have that hearing. If you never have hardware that can display 120 hz your eyes will never learn to see and your brain to react to data that fast. But if you have it maybe you can learn to use it.

However like I said keep it balanced if you have a garbage computer that only gets 15 fps not much point in a 120 hz monitor. If you cannot afford something more get a job and skip the monitor.

This pretty much sums it all up right here.

Grain is a cutie-pie.
I should stop being lazy and do research on all shit even after being given information from a "reputable" source.

You are wrong

I had a physiology professor tell me that the human eye cannot see more than 15 fps. I do not think anyone here would support that. Just look at the method used to determine the number and shoot holes in it.

Look-out.
Captain Redundancy has made his comeback.

Good to have you back, Rudy. You may call be Steve or "stfu faggot" like everyone else does.
