So, I played this match the other day, and well... the guy totally has map hacks...
Just wanted to let all you starcrafters out there know that there ARE hackers...
Check this replay from the protoss camera... you'll see he looks at my base early game, before scouting, and foresees all my armies coming, and often checks my base through the fog of war...

In Starcraft, what the fuck are those little busy things walking back and forth? Are they knitting a Star thingy?
And rolling things, are they lunar rovers or some shit.
And the stuff flying around, what the fuck is that?
And what the fuck is happening?
It looking like an roving alien circle jerk with tank battles.
And there are dozens of maps, all a flat thing with a few bumps and hills and maybe a ravine or something.
Why are they called MAPS, when they are like Stratego boards!?!?
I mean, what the fuck is going on!??!

Those were my initial impressions of Starcraft. I haven't played the game, but watched Poor Billy's match. If you've never seen it, it's very hard to tell what is happening and why.
I'm sure it's a lot of fun if you know what it's all about.

I started to lol...but as you kept going I started to frown and furl my eyebrows. SC2 is basically chess in game form, its way too hard for you comprehend what's going on so I won't try.

Son, I am dissapoint.

It's nothing like chess. What are you talking about!!? Because it takes strategy, it's like chess?
If anything, it's like RISK.

In Chess, you have different types of pieces: A king, the queen, bishops, knights, castles...etc.

In Starcraft, you have different types of pieces too: Tanks, zerglings, marines, big scary-ass flying ufo ships...etc.

In Chess, each type of piece has certain special abilities: A king can only move one space at a time, around it's surrounding perimeter. While the queen can move horizontally, vertically and diagonally across the entire board.

In Starcraft, each type of piece has certain special abilities: A tank can shoot from a distance, and can modulize itself to become a stationary tank; allowing it to shoot further away. While a zergling can only attack other "pieces" it is next to.

In Chess, the objective is to corner the king; called a "Check Mate."

In Starcraft, the objective is to corner the enemy and cause them to surrender, if they do not, you kill every last "piece."

I hope this sums it up for you.

Try using an Indian Defense against the tanks.

Let me put it this way, I didn't get a local rating of 1700 in chess for no reason, I know both chess and starcraft probably 5x as well as you do. If you don't think so I'll be glad to challenge you in either game.

That said they are similar in that there are numerous "opening" lines in both chess and starcraft that go in and out of favor, the indian defense is equivelent to say a 3rax terran opener into vikings, an unorthadox and highly new strong opening thats being tested in its limits. Mid-game and endgame scenarios have the same feel of chess IMO. Yes they are completely two different games but I have yet to play a game that feels so similar to chess, in this game as in chess the more you know, the better your openings, you will be guarenteed to win once you hold even minute material advantage after gaining that small advantage in the beginning if you play correctly for the rest of the game.

See. there you go again, leaping to conclusions.

I never challenge your prowess in chess.
And i never put down Starcraft or diminish how fun it is or the fact it uses strategy.
Where do you get this nonsense!?

I was just saying that it hard to discern what is happening as a non-player and that is not just like chess.
According to your analogue, War is just like chess and that is a stretch.

What i should do is challenge you to a game of chess, since your ranked.

Why do you think you think you know more about chess than me!?
I am really curious, seeing that i come from families both with strong chess and backgammon players, and have beaten even my father, who studied it for 50 years..
I am just dumbfounded by your arrogance sometimes.

So you admit that you know nothing about sc2. So you admint you couldn't understand why it is like chess. How can you argue that it is not like chess? Why are you trying to tell people that know both sc2 and chess? If you want a guest pass for 7 hours let me know.

I am wrong. A 3d game of building bases, where you don't see the other opponent unless you scout them, having physical material assaults that depend on swiftness and surprise, played from bases one physically constructs, is just like chess really.

You win.

There never was a debate. I had to pleasure to talk with an International Master of chess today while he was streaming in http://www.teamliquid.net who is a starcraft player who said starcraft is one of the most similar games there is to chess.

If you don't take it from a guy who could wrap circles around my brain with a 2400+ rating and can beat people like Magnus Carlsen in blitz chess, I think you truly do wallow in a world of ignorance where you make snap judgements without knowing the criterion about it.

P.S. he will be streaming the U.S. Chess championships with analysis tomorrow night (not sure of time) here if anyone would like to watch with me http://www.livestream.com/LiquidBela

I can agree that the core of the game play and the mechanics are pretty much chess. The execution is something completely different. Therefore I can see Impalas point where he states it's nothing like chess, as he does not know anything about the game.

As I can see it, you're just focusing on two different points and just walk around each other.

The vision of the game play and the mechanics are indeed extremely similar to chess. Al tough the way you execute it, is imo something totally different. You can only execute one move in chess before it's your opponents turn, where in starcraft you the limit is your microing skill vs your opponents that limits the moves you can do before your opponent has done his. There are more hidden factors in starcraft which introduce chance to the game. As Impala stated with his comment.

I totally agree with Valiums too though. If you just look at the game on the paper, it's basically chess.

YEEE

I don't mean to say ZOMG STARCRAFT 2Z0RS = CHESS *HARD NERDORGASM* LOLOMFGBBQ.

I mean to say, and the person I spoke with meant to say is compared to any other PC RTS game, starcraft arguably comes closest to chess in its mentality and the likeness of build orders. Last night the streamer was talking about how in both in chess and starcraft there is a current tragedy going on in both communities of just copying build orders from pros instead of learning the hard way from scratch up. He said in both games it undercuts your development and you will pay later for taking shortcuts, after he proceeded to beat an a fellow International Master with a 2567 rating all while talking about starcraft instead of really focusing on the game; I then proceeded to offer him an internet BJ

Really! So,what is the name of this International Chess Master who plays Starcraft?

Wouldn't a player with a 2567 Elo rating be a Grandmaster?
And this Master beat a Grandmaster level chess player while chatting with you or while playing!?!?

Uh huh.

If Starcraft is just like Chess a Giraffe is just like a Beagle puppy.
After all, they are both mammals and have 4 legs.

Why don't you PM yourself for his name and quti talking out of your ass. There was a thread on him and his friend said he's a Hungarian IM but would not share his name. For obvious reasons as a well known streamer you don't share your real name.

http://www.chessclub.com/finger/Jim-Raynor

This is his new account for teamliquid.net he streams under if you wish to stalk him more. He's at 2340 with 3-0 wins, zero losses with 2 wins against IM's.
