Speedtest.net is more of an indication of web browsing speeds, they only use 3rd party servers and most of them are horrible, just there to get the companies name on the page.

Speakeasy uses their own servers, and anybody that uses speakeasy in the workplace knows they don't skimp on power. It's ideal for benchmarking.

Not paying for their biggest modem it's still a bit overpriced imo, got the one under it.

And

Speakeasy was

25.66
and
4.57
Almost exactly the same, so there doesn't seem to be any difference.
FIOS DOES rape, considering the PING is the thing, when combined with lots of bandwidth.

Over 150 miles at 10ms is pretty spiffy. I can play Russian servers with smoother play than California.

I don't think you Americans know how lucky you are. This is top notch internet here and it costs about $70 a month for 25gb limit (i.e. get capped to dial-up speed if go over. DL+UL).
It would be so great if the government cut our internet costs but they're too busy wasting all the money on installation in roofing that catches fire. (Midnight Oil: "oo-ooh how can we sleep when our beds are burning!")

Not all that lucky in this aspect, internet began here and yet it's held behind the curve due to provider greed, prices aren't that hot either.

Could be far better.

My internet sucks, but hey, its $60 with a limit of 100GB :).

Speedtest can often give incorect readings I have often achieved 250Mbit download but the uopload was about right, no idea why that happens.

i pay $30 for at&t dsl. i get 1.3 dl and .5 u/l. no limit.

but if it rains within 60 miles of my house... i practically lose all line quality. i cant even load a radar loop from the national weather service. playing games is impossible.

i think at&t is neglecting its dsl in favor of its u-verse (cable) option. ffs, its dsl, not a fucking satellite system. weather shouldn't affect it. :x

Those DSL lines are sometimes ancient telephone cabling, some of it underground. Some DSL runs on 50 year old wiring.

I use Speakeasy all the time and the last I checked I was at >15Mbps down and about 1.1Mbps up. That's through Charter communications.

I guess I top you in upload speed, but my ISP is literally the worst in the country as voted by PC World. The Better Business Bureau put out scathing reports about it (and I can personally attest to at least half of their complaints). My personal favorite example of how incompetent they are is the fact a few years ago they deleted a few thousand active email accounts when doing a sweep of inactive accounts. I think the people whose accounts they fucked got the meager sum of a 50 dollar credit or something

It has a monopoly on my area

Ghost Dog_TSGK

Yeah Charter works great here, thing is they bought out our last provider Cablevision immediately after they finished an entire overhaul of West Michigans cable feeds.

Charter had nothing to do with the network or infrastructure, I will give Charter credit for bringing tech support primarily back to Canada but that only happened after they got a "new investor".

EDIT: a 51 ping from 50 miles distance...huge node routing issues, I bet a tracert from your location would be disgusting to look at, and yet I remember you ping 90 to our London server when I ping 125? I guess they managed to get a couple nodes routed properly (out of 300+).

It has a monopoly on my area
same here but i been piecing stuff together using dslreports.com which also cover cable connections

anyways the reason besides the speeds of dsl is so poopoo'd is that its limited by distance maximum usually only being 15,000-18,000 feet coupled with the aged tech and many other restrictions poor shielding; ionosphere noise interference; filtration; powerlines; internal house wiring; etc..

they have no competition here as well theres no chance of cable or cable moving in as they don't see it profitable with the town loving its rustic style small community and its negative views on expansion though when they did try to make progress by having meeting with city council & comcast but comcast didn't show.

so since they have no competition theres no reason for them to maintain/improve there network. I had to fight/deal with there operators for about 3 hours one day on a line conduction test that they seemingly never did after 5 times of being dropped and them searching for any said tests through there systems the last operator told me flat out "you can not have dsl on that line period." and "I have the test right here" next day I called back mentioned no test and there was a flag on my account that I couldn't have dsl but yet this operator informed me I could get there basic package since then have upgraded to there express package. So stubbornness got me this super fast connection kinda funny how many techs have you had out on your end, also have they done a line quality test?
.
usually with cable that poor something has chewed or chopped the lines.

Im in the US and I pay 90$ for this shit. I could get 10Mbps up and down for 2000$ a month lol. Have to live with it since Im out in the boonies surrounded by corn fields. I'd love to have a land line let alone something like fios lol.

I reckon FTTC (Fibre to the cabinet) would help alot of you guys suffering slow download, I am sure you have the same hting but called different in the USA the only bit that is copper cabling is the bit that runs along your street to your house which maybe upto 500-600 meters drastically reducing the losses copper gives for DSL.
