8 out of 10 times i start steam, nothing happens. meaning no "connecting to steam account: blahblahblah" box appears. yet steam.exe is alive in my processes.

so i have to kill the steam.exe process, then restart steam, and it works fine.

why does this keep happening. it's fucking annoying.

For me, starting steam friend for me seems to be a tougher task than to launch Oblivion.
My whole desktop freezes until it connects to friendlist.

It hangs for me too, not as much as it used to but it does still do it, just steam being steam.

Matter of fact, this never happened until the game overlay showed up and it seems to always be hanging in the processes with steam.

Yeah it's really annoying, seems lately when I launch steam I have to wait 4-5 minutes for it to be ready to use.

Mine automatically starts up when I log on to my computer for the first time and it is always the last item to finish loading. Can't say I have ever shut down Steam and start it up again without logging off.

My steam basically opens/connects instantly, I rarely if ever have to wait more than 30 seconds, so could this be something to do with your guy's hardware?

I haven't had those bugs for years, but Steam client is fcking slow and it's hanging the system all the time, that's no news. If you want to know why, remember Valve's policy at free stuff like hl2dm
Also in 7/10 cases of Steam hanging I see it uploading a few megabytes of some crap visible on the speed meter. Looks like Valve spy users. I read that they gather info about installed software: OS, browsers, torrents :spy:

or you could just set steam to not auto start in the steam settings.

I never let Steam autostart. It happens when I manually start Steam althought it has not happened for a while mainly because I have not signed in much recently.

My Steam often takes a while when opening it up whenever I have games that are trying to update. Even when I pause them (who wants to dl a 700mb tf2 update once a week?) it does this. Works fine tho when I have nothing trying to dl.

you can turn off auto updates for games. you can also chose which games you want to auto update and which ones you dont

I might just do that, I have the bandwidth but I cannot believe a software in this day and age would start updating a game while I'm in another game.

Runs like shit when it does.

Not only that it just does it as soon as it reaises there is an update, recently whilst steam was running in the background and browsing the net I wondered why everything is going so slow, I eventually found out Steam is downloading a 2.6GB patch to Bad company2 every other piece of software i use asks if I want to download the latest update and only if I select YES does it happen.
