Yeah, J@nek and I were talking about that about a month or 2 ago. Oh what could of been lol. The new HL2CTF is worth playing if you like hl2dm on quake steriods and ofcourse like maps with flags :)

Wow, I was just going to mention you guys try working together to unify the mods, but there might conflict of interests, time conflicts, and stuff. I'm seeing similar things that I've seen ag2. Do U.S. people play CTF? I'm not big on flags, but it might be worth checking out. Especially since "no one" in U.S. plays ag2. Sad face!

Sac, did you create all those sexy maps, or you updating, or...? Sorry, I know nothing about the hl2ctf world.

I built some and updated a few others that were popular and the map author wasnt interested in updating it. The ones you think are sexy Im sure are mine though ;). As for unifying, J@nek was nice enough to help me out with a few things code related that our ctf coder hadnt dug deep into and I think him for that. J@nek is a very good sdk coder and seems like a real go getter in getting code updated. The CTF team would of benefited with someone like that over the years, but it is what it is. Im really amazed you've never played this mod though. It is one of, if not the oldest, legit hl2 mod. The first internal release was December 2 2004. That is pretty damn early. At the height of HL2:CTF the dev team played Valve in a ctf match where the dev team was winning pretty easily over Valve until Valve broke out the hacks (there is a vid of it on youtube). CTF made steam news and we were averaging around 500 players a day and over 50 servers.

The mode that you will probably like (many dmers do) is Domination mode. It is identical to deathmatch and the maps are the same style and can even be hl2dm maps (Valar's Asylum will be in the release as a domination map). The only difference is that it is more team oriented because it is based on playing keep away from the other team with the 1 flag that is in the map.

Cool. So I downloaded b1.71 at hl2ctf.com and it looks borked. None of the weapons show up, and the first time I crashed. I tried the patch too, just to see if that would make a difference. Nada.

1.71 uses HL2DM as a base so once HL2DM changed to new engien 1.71 stopped working properly.
If you want to play it you need to use an older Nosteam HL2DM

There are a ton of differences. Some of the main gameplay ones would have to be the "flag in hand" and team runes. Those maps you remember are much different now as well. Easier to navigate through and layouts changed for better gameplay. Plus there will be at least 6 new release maps. Another big addition are the new gamemodes, football, excessive, instagib, and capture point. But all this is the tip of the iceberg.

So Impala was talking to me last night and got me interested....

Will the movement be EXACTLY how it is pre-update hl2dm? If the movement has the OB delay still I'm not even touching it. If the movement is the same I'd be looking for a team. CSS is cool and stuff and requires much thinking ect but sometimes I just wanna bunnyhop over a dudes face.

the movement in hl2:ctf is about 10x more dynamic than hl2dm, you can walljump, nade jump, all kinds of cool shit.

what panic said. Its not the same at all. Bhop is actually programmed into the code. It's easier to do and much faster speeds. At the same time, there is a larger learning curve in ctf because of the walljumping and explosion jumping. There are guys that use walljumping to gain momentum for bhop as well which has only been mastered by a few. There are also more weapons and runes (powerups) if the server so chooses to have them on.

It's available. Infact, it's going to be in the options menu lol. Im assuming you are referring to the field of view for you to see ingame. Like fov 90, which is default. If so, yes, its there and available between 70 and 120.

Viewmodel FOV is different than FOV, viewmodel is to do with the weapons FOV on your screen, default is 54.

hmm, I see. So phantom, are you saying the railgun sticks out on the screen to far? I would say you are correct. The only issue with that is that the gun is kicking in the screenshot and doesnt stick out nearly that far normally :). I dont see us messing with viewmodel fov unless its something the community pushes hard to have and its never been brought up before now lol.

Well, there will be a few throwback maps in the release from TFC. 2fort and Epicenter. With the addition of the Attack vs defend (Dustbowl, Avanti), Push (Battlefield 2 Bad Company style) and capture point (Warpath), plus multiple flag capabilities, the gameplay that maps can bring is pretty endless. So expect to see a few more TFC maps. I have layouts of Rock2, Well, Avanti, and Warpath already, but they are the vmfs from the hl2dm versions and were ported straight from TFC. They are not proper in dimensions and the port over to source made the brushwork pretty crappy. I'd like to recreate these gems and make them HL2CTF's own style.

Sacrifist

2011-02-05 05:03:23

Well yes this is true. Its been a long time coming. But, there are a few excuses....

1. The original coder left for (guess) yup, Black Mesa lol
2. We were without a coder for a year
3. The coder we got in 2008 coded enough in to have a decent release, but we didnt feel like it was "special" and before it could become special, he got married and had a kid
4. I had another kid and couldnt do as much to keep things moving between keeping the guys "on it" and making maps.
5. The dude that does EVERYTHING, other then code, had financial issues so he couldnt work on the mod enough to get into the flow of things.

Now fast forward to now....
1. We have 2 coders
2. Im back in action
3. The other dude is back in action

What does all this equal....
HL2CTF 2.0 coming very soon. We are 2 little things away from a playtest and have gotten about every type of gameplay possible into the game. We will be pushing through the playtest for bugs and also pounding out more maps to compliment the new gameplay and modes available and then release. After looking over the svn, we have 883 revisions since our last release. So it's got a lot of new stuff.

Question for you though, Sacrifist. Why the holding the flag in-hand? What was wrong with the strapped on the back look?
Personally, it looks kinda goofy. That being said, will there be an option for the player to make the flag carrier look like how you guys had it originally?
I am actually kinda curious in checking out HL2:CTF again if there is still an interest in it.

already asked, the answer is no. To many people issues with knowing they were holding the flag so now its in hand, though imho its to obtrusive to my view would be cool if they could animate it to closing up into a baton item if only from a first person view or having only a section of it in hand visible say a batons length and the rest transparent

Yeah, seriously. To any developers that are reading this, what was wrong with just keeping this?
Any other veteran HL2CTF players that may be reading this feel the same way about the "flag in-hand" looking kinda odd?
Looking back at this mod, though, I have to admit that I had way more fun playing CTF then I ever had playing vanilla HL2DM.
As a whole, it's personally way more interesting team gameplay.
Watching these matches that Styx uploaded really reminds me of how fun HL2CTF was! Would love to see this mod make a successful comeback and revitalize the Half-Life 2 multiplayer scene.

I always thought the flag in hand was a bad idea and created unecessary coding and animations.

This version used OB engine right and I noticed HL2DM and AG2 blood levels when shot hard increase when the switchover was made so can anything be done t solve it if it hasnt already.

Sacrifist

2011-03-06 09:35:27

It really was amazing how bad it was when the flag was on the back. The main reason nobody knew they had the flag was because you can pass it in hl2ctf using the gravgun. Even with the sounds (that were plenty loud) and the hud icons easily showing you had the flag, players still didnt know they had the flag. It really was an issue in the heat of battle and ctf is a very fast paced game and when the guns are a blazin', it was hard to notice the flag was on your back. I personally think the flag in hand looks a lot better and will end all issues with players not knowing they have the flag. Plus, the 1 handed weapon animations are cool :). Defme, your account is still there. I updated you back to playtester status. Yes, substation, awesome map and one i would like to be updated and added to the release if we have time to do it.

why do a public playtest? We've done public ones before, but we want this one inhouse. No biggy. Besides, all you have to do is ask me for the link if i know you lol.

I like the playtest a lot, seems like it has a lot of potential. Go into it with an open mind, though. The wall jump feels quirky as shit to me, but I hear that it IS masterable. The people that play it are very willing to help out, too. Don't say it sucks just cause you suck.

Mod is the Smooooth. Even a snail like me can fly around in there. I love it. Great job.
I just fixed my PC and will try some tomorrow and report anything weird to CTF.

Again, great job. The new SMG is so good, not having to hear that old thing all day.

Football is crazyass hilarious off the hook.

Rocket jumping is ridiculum.

Wall jumping, haven't gotten real good but it adds a big dimension.
And the movement is so quick and smooth.
There is something for DM fans to like there.
It is HL2TDM but MORE.

We have these already. Fov is available from 70 to 120. Open console, type cl_fov 120 and you are good to go. Hitsounds can be enabled by going into options, multiplayer, advanced tab.

For that to work you need a different crosshair for ach weapon idealy or a weapon bar ala Quake3.

The second round of playtesting will begin this weekend. There will be a lot going on Sunday starting at 2 pm est. A bunch of bugs and annoyances have been fixed. We will also be testing a few new maps, instagib map "Duality", capture point test map "Warpath" and another territorial control map (like Overwatch) "Lockdown". Sunday's playtests we will need lots of demos for promo videos.

If you havent already, you can ask to be a playtester in this thread. We wont be accepting many more playtesters, so if you wanna check out the mod and help test, now would be the time.

Yeah, there will probably be a few more tests actually. We are knocking out some bugs still and stabilizing the mod so we can have a solid next test. Stay tuned on the ctf forums.
