k so im using sony vegas 8 and i have a bunch of 1 avi clips compressed with xvid so i have my project size at 1280 x 720 and the clips are recorded in 1280 x 1024 res so i render the vid and it comes out in like 640 x 400 size?
Dunno but you shouldn't do that (render in different sizes) and you shouldn't compress your avi clips in Xvid :/

sounds like you're trying to render in a different resolution than the one you captured at
try this: start a new project in Vegas, then in the new project dialog there should be an option to match the settings from a selected video clip (let me know if you can't find this, I will see if I can find it for you when I'm back at my house, at the parents' right now). choose this option, then select one of your video clips and the projects settings will match the settings for that video clip (resolution, frames per second, etc.). that should solve your problem.
oh and uncompressed AVI clips are always the best to work with even though they're a pig on HD space, compressing the source clips in anything besides HuffyUV could complicate things alot later on.

go to File on the menu, click on New, and the new project wizard will come up, name your project if you want, and click the Next Button
the next window should have a message that says
"Project preview performance is often improved if the project settings match the most commonly used source media settings. You may select an existing media file with which to match project settings."
with a check box under it that says "Make my project settings match this media file" next to it. check this box and click the browse button. Browse to and select one of your clips, and your project settings will match all the settings (resolution and framerate being the two most important ones) for that clip, which should solve your problem (needless to say all your clips should be exported at the same resolution and framerate).
that is how it works in Sony Vegas Platinum 8 at least, don't know which one you're using.

I'll try and post a picture of what it should look like if I can get a photobucket or something
main thing is to just make sure your image resolution and framerate matches your source clips
