Or you can select it for audio compression in virtualdub also.

for some reason the audio compression is greyed out in the menu on VirtualDub... even when I load the audio as a separate WAV

anything I can do to turn it back on?

right now I'm using uncompressed PCM for my videos which is causing unnessecarily large filesizes, but VDub won't let me compress audio at all for some reason...

Try changing to full processing mode instead of direct stream copy.

that worked... thanks!

downloaded the newest version of Winamp which supposedly has the LAME codec, but it won't show up in VirtualDub still... and it won't let me use MP3 audio with the video so I can't use LAME.exe to convert it...

Try the ACM version.

Extract files, then go into the lame folder, right click on LameACM.inf and select install.

Now you should have it as an audio codec in vdub.

that solved it, I can now use LAME in Vdub.

thanks again!
