I'm looking at LCD monitors but i'm not sure if i should buy a widescreen or not. Does anyone play on a widescreen and how does it look?

I don't have a wide screen however I can't see myself buying a non wide screen next time.

Z makes a good point. I would recommend AT LEAST a 19". I upgraded from a 15" LCD to a 20.1 Sceptre Widescreen LCD. I love it and it was cheap.
Got it for 169.99.

I'm fine with my 17" View Sonic... My next step would be a widescreen.. I really dont see the point in changing for now anyway.

Do you have a choice? Honestly there are very few 4:3 aspect ratio panels out now and most are more expensive because you get less area out of a wide screen of the same size so the LCD panel manufacturers can sell wide screen monitors cheaper and eventually just wanted to get rid of 4:3s

As far as games are concerned for HL2DM anyway wide screen is better as you will see more around you since you effectively have a wider FOV.
For most normal activities though the normal screens gave you more pixels to work with. The best price / performance are 22" wide screens now. You can get them for 200$ and unlike the larger resolution 24" monitors you do not need as much graphics power to run them at native resolution.

I'm kinda partial to my X-Flat crt its 18 inch? Dunno but I like it cause it's flat that's why it stays.

Oh and it has a tinted screen and it makes all the difference I can stare at this thing for 10 hours straight without eye strain or headaches of any sort, so it has a few benefits of an lcd but I see myself buying a widescreen and using both..........is it possible to run a crt and lcd on the same graphics card?

It does have dual output.

Yes you can run LCDs and CRTs off the same monitor so long as you have 2 outputs. Nothing too it really just plug it in and windows should detect it. The CRT will be a superior performer in game so long as you are running say 85 hz or more.

Ah thanks Fearsome, yeah the crt runs 85hz and I <3 it for games, thanks for the lookout conflict I'll keep that in mind, my bro had the same issue before :/

I took this from one of my previus posts.
Epoch wrote:If your considering a and LCD, what you'll be looking for in a gaming monitor is as follows.

-High native resolution
-High contrast 700-1000.1 (DC 3000.1)
-2ms response rate
-Widescreen (why not?)

Other than that make sure to comb the reviews regarding models fitting your desired specs to check for inherent model defects like backlight bleeding, bad color matching, or dead pixel problems. Also make sure you use a DVI-D cable to ensure best quality. If I were to buy a new monitor for gaming I would probly go with this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6824116095

It's a 19" widescreen with the resolution of a 22" widescreen, with great contrast ratio and 2ms response time. Amazing price too, considering the specs.
My 2 cents :D
Theres no reason not to go widescreen anymore!:D My best advice advice to you while your checking out different LCD's is DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Can't stress that enough. If you do your research you'll be happy with the FIRST product you buy instead of condemning yourself to the shipping and hanling nightmare of trial and error lol. Unless you buy it retail, then it doesn't matter lol.

I have to agree that there is a lot more care to be taken in purchasing a new LCD than I previously thought, but I don't see any lcd (basic) beating this XFLAT until it is dead this is an awesome monitor, chances are my widescreen will be extended desktop until I finally kill the xflat.

Yeah flat screen CRT's are pretty pimp. CRT's are far superior when it comes to color matching, and if they have high refrech rates then its just unbeatable, unless you really need the space for some reason.

You can imagine this crt on it is erm.....interesting.

To anyone considering anything larger that a 22, I found that I had to put my 24 inch 3 feet away from my face to feel right before with my 20 inch crt I was comfortable at about 18 inches away. Something to consider if you don't have enough space on your desk, as it feels funny when its too close.

Epoch

2008-03-12 20:19:20

Yeah I had the same issue when I switched from a 17" CRT to a 19" LCD widescreen granted its not nearly the difference between 17"and 24" but ti still made a huge difference. My CRT was pretty close, definately well within arms length but my LCD is probly 6 inches or more farther back on my desk than my arm can reach, so huge difference in distance lol. Its amazing how much more space LCD leave you with, I'll never go back to CRT.

If you are able to afford it: GO FOWARD TO DELL's 30 INCHES WIDESCREEN LCD MONITOR! WOO!

If not, SAMSUNG has some neat and unexpensive models that rock, like mine :)

Yeah, I'm using a 20inch Samsung SyncMaster 204B.

I got it almost 2 years ago and last time I checked they don't have it on Newegg anymore although I got it from CompUSA.

My native resolution is 1600x1200 though. I think its the largest square resolution, so thats why I got it. :)

Do you get any backlight bleeding on dark/black screens? This was a known issue with that monitor but it all depended on whether you got the US made pannel or the China made pannel. I have the 19"WS (906bw) model which is basically the exact same monitor but a wee bit smaller. This thing has some pretty serius backlight bleeding but it doesn't really bother me, its not enough to noticabley change any colors when displaying dark images, so I'm living with it.

I dotn th ink so but then again i have no idea what you mean :o
There is a 22" version of my monitor but the resolution is the same 1680x1050 i didnt buy it becasue it just means the pixels are larger.

Mine has no dead pixel, back light bleeding, or anything of the manner.

Epoch

2008-04-05 01:22:03

yeah I don't think the 20" panels had that problem for some reason, they may not have been naufactured in china. Its really not a problem for me, but I notice a ton of light ruining my beautiful blacks around the edges of the monitor when the screen is VERY dark, if not completely black. But I mostly play games and surf the web so its either light screens or I'm trying so hard to kill people thaty I don't notice the bleeding at all. A dead pixel would be amuch bigger deal for me lol. I hate those little buggers.

http://www.excaliberpc.com/Samsung_204B ... 62797.html

Very little ghosting at all and great picture quality for the price. I only paid 270$ at newegg but it seems to be deactivated there for some reason.

DUDE!! Seriously lose the additude! From what you said you did not know why newegg stopped selling that particular samsung model. He was simply providing you with the reason....newegg stopped selling my samsung monitor aswell, for the exact same reason. Computer technology becomes obsolete so fast that companies like newegg are constantly going to be renewing their inventories to keep up with the times. Theres no reaosn to get all huffy.

Lol... I use the same one except mine is black, and from what I can tell it still pwns face off of newer monitors, if I went any bigger Id just get a 30incher.
