i say go with a 4850 better performance for the price. The rest looks decent though.

154.99 after mail in rebate, falls right in there with your prices on video cards.

Mobo shouldn't matter to much I don't think, but i'm not 100% sure on the chipsets with different cards, I know you can but it might lack different settings.

I wonder what the 4870 x2 would get then.

if youre in the market for a new videocard forget about nvidia for now... if you change your videocard on a regular basis you can try the new gtx series but if its gonna be a long term investment go for a radeon 4000 series card. when real dx10 titles hit the stores the geforce 8/9 cards will be literally useless. in a geometry shader (one of the flagships of dx10) benchmark a hd3870 is 3 times faster than a gtx280.
64 tap tessalation:
HD3870: 151FPS
GTX280: 55FPS
8800GTS: 9FPS
also current nvidia videocard generations only support dx10.0, not dx10.1 which means no properly working anti aliasing for nvidia customers.

i recommend getting a radeon hd4850 card for resolutions up to 1680*1050.

about cpus: short term investment -> core 2 duo (eg e8400, if youre short on money: e7200)
long term investment -> core 2 quad (eg q9300, cheaper alternative: q6600)

very useful in a game that only updates itself either 66 or 100 times perc second.
