Get a new HDD, make your new drive your Master and you old HDD your Slave, then simply access all your old drives content! simples!

Then buy a proper Antivirus. I recomend Nod32

Now days alot of viruses are very lethal. Because you can just add functionality due to the modular nature of programming. IE a virus comes packaged as multiple viruses. They run through disable antivirus, mess up just about every security feature you have and then automatically download other viruses. IMO the best thing to do is to go download ubuntus live CD on another computer and burn it to a CD. Then use that to boot your computer and move the pictures to another external hard drive or another partition that has been formatted. Make sure you scan the shit out of anything you keep with multiple different antivirus solutions.

multiple antivirus programs is counterproductive; they label each other as potentially harmful

Scanning with multiple antivirus does not mean they are all installed you scan separately with online scanners or temporary installs. No one said to run multiple antivirus programs all the time.

f-secure online

Any antivirus can be a temporary install just install it then uninstall when you are done. No point in paying for that so pick up the numerous free ones.
avira free
avgfree
almost anyone with cable can get mcafee for free.

then there is free standing utilities which do not require and install like stinger

Reinstall on a fresh HDD and get Partition Manager to access just your photos and then do a long reformat of the old drive.
You don't know where the virus is locate, accessing the old drive is potentially dangerous.
At least the thing will not be jammed all in your Windows registry and re-invented and protected by Windows services.

I don't think ubuntu is awesome I think it is a very outdated and always behind OS. But the main advantage is noobs cant install much so they are unlikely to get viruses, in addition virus writers pretty much ignore linux for personal use because no one uses it. What I would suggest is you look into a sandbox or virtual machine based safe browser if she tends to go to shady sites and get viruses.

Make a partition with deep freeze for torrents, porn, or clueless users.

Put w/e on yours.

It works like a charm <3
